A South¬≠west Air¬≠lines Boe¬≠ing 737 jet approach¬≠ing Will Rogers Air¬≠port in Okla¬≠homa City dropped per¬≠ilous¬≠ly close to homes, fly¬≠ing below 500 feet over a res¬≠i¬≠den¬≠tial neigh¬≠bor¬≠hood in the ear¬≠ly hours of June 21st.

Air traffic controllers Monitoring the Las Vegas to Oklahoma City flight noticed the plane miss its approach and issued an emergency low altitude alert to the pilots. Locals reported seeing the large airliner buzz by at tree-top level, setting off alarms and terrifying onlookers who feared a crash was imminent.

The jet eventually regained safe altitude and circled around to land safely, though an investigation has been launched to understand what caused the plane to descend so sharply. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and Southwest Airlines are probing the incident.

Southwest said safety is their top priority and the routine is being scrutinized according to the airline’s strict protocols. Neighbors meanwhile were left rattled by the dangerously low overflight, with some capturing video of the alarming flyby that woke whole blocks.

More details will be analyzed to determine why the commercial airliner compromised safety codes in such an alarming manner over an occupied community. Further explanation is sought on both the technical and human factors involved.
