
“My sweet and beloved friend Mitch passed away early this morning,” Kathryn Scott said in a tribute post on Facebook.
“He was a great gift in my life. I cherish my warm memories of his beautiful soul. My heart is broken.”
Throughout his impressive career, the actor starred alongside Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.
Ryan has played a wide range of roles over the years, including a cult leader and even a portrayal of Hugh Hefner.
Ryan has appeared on numerous television shows, including All My Children, Golden Girls and Murder, She Wrote.
He published a memoir in 2021 titled Fall of a Sparrow that details his struggles with alcoholism.
“I am blessed. I’m blessed with 30 years of drunkenness, I’ve managed to live the life of an actor to envy,” Ryan said in the book’s preface.
“And I lived a lot of real life while I was at it.
Sober for the next 30 years, I’m told I came out a good and useful human being.”
Ryan’s stepdaughter, Denise Freed, confirmed that he died of congestive heart failure at his Los Angeles home, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to his daughter-in-law, his survivors include his wife, Barbara; and five grandchildren.
