Kate Winslet has opened up about the challenges of filming the iconic kissing scene with Leonardo DiCaprio in the blockbuster movie “Titanic.” In a new interview, the acclaimed actress admitted that the much-celebrated moment was actually a “nightmare” to shoot and “not all it’s cracked up to be.”

Winslet, who played the role of Rose in the 1997 film, recalled the difficulties they faced during the scene where her character kisses Jack (DiCaprio) at the top of the ship.

The actress revealed that their makeup kept rubbing off on each other, forcing them to constantly retouch between takes.

“Between takes, I was basically redoing our makeup,” Winslet said. “We kept doing this kiss, and I’ve got a lot of pale makeup on and I would have to do our makeup checks — on both of us, between takes — and I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me.”

The 48-year-old actress also noted that the scene was challenging to film due to the director’s meticulous attention to lighting and the difficulty of accessing the specific part of the set they were working on, which made it hard for the hair and makeup team to be there with them.

Despite the behind-the-scenes struggles, Winslet acknowledged that her co-star DiCaprio, 49, was “quite the romancer.” She joked, “No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio. It was not all it’s cracked up to be.”

The actress also addressed the rumors of a rift between her and “Titanic” director James Cameron, dismissing them as “stupid” and emphasizing the strong relationship they have. Winslet and Cameron have continued to collaborate, most recently on the 2022 film “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

“Titanic” went on to become a global phenomenon, earning Winslet worldwide recognition and fame, though she admitted it was a difficult adjustment at the time. “I actually felt a bit beaten up by it, truth be told…I had a lovely family, but all my family saw is ‘My God, Kate’s got work in a really big film,’ ” she said.

The revelations about the behind-the-scenes challenges of the iconic “Titanic” kissing scene offer a fascinating glimpse into the making of one of the most beloved and celebrated moments in cinema history.
