Hiram Kas­ten, a beloved come­di­an and actor who found fame on the hit sit­com “Sein­feld,” has passed away at the age of 71. Accord­ing to his offi­cial obit­u­ary, Kas­ten died on Sun­day after bat­tling var­i­ous ill­ness­es, includ­ing prostate cancer.

Kas­ten was a fix­ture on the New York City com­e­dy scene in the 1970s and 80s, ris­ing to promi­nence dur­ing the city’s com­e­dy boom. 

It was dur­ing this time that he met fel­low come­di­an Jer­ry Sein­feld, and the two struck up a life­long friend­ship that would even­tu­al­ly lead to Kas­ten appear­ing in three episodes of “Sein­feld” as Elaine Benes’ cowork­er, Michael.

In addi­tion to his mem­o­rable role on “Sein­feld,” Kas­ten went on to enjoy a pro­lif­ic career in tele­vi­sion, rack­ing up cred­its on a num­ber of oth­er pop­u­lar sit­coms over the next cou­ple of decades. Some of the shows he appeared on include “My Wife and Kids,” “Saved By the Bell,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Every­body Loves Ray­mond,” “7th Heav­en,” “Curb Your Enthu­si­asm,” and “Men of a Cer­tain Age.”

Kas­ten is sur­vived by his wife of 38 years, Diana, his daugh­ter Mil­li­cent, and numer­ous extend­ed fam­i­ly mem­bers. Funer­al ser­vices are being planned in both New York and Los Ange­les to cel­e­brate the life of this beloved com­e­dy icon.

The loss of Hiram Kas­ten is a poignant one for fans of clas­sic sit­coms and the gold­en era of New York City com­e­dy. His endur­ing lega­cy as a tal­ent­ed per­former and cher­ished friend will undoubt­ed­ly con­tin­ue to inspire come­di­ans and actors for gen­er­a­tions to come.
