It is with a heavy heart that his representative announced today that two pairs of Christian Atsu’s shoes have been found in the rubble of Turkey.
The former Newcastle and Chelsea player was last seen at his home in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, which was destroyed in a devastating earthquake.
Agent Nana Sechere has confirmed the 31-year-old has not yet been found and the search continues.
However, two pairs of Ghanaian shoes were found in the rubble of his apartment.
The soccer ace has been missing since the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck in the early hours of Monday, February 6th.
As the death toll in Syria and Turkey continues to rise, concerns about Atu are growing.
There are conflicting reports that he was rescued from the rubble, but his agency, Hatayishpor, denies this.
Cecile reported the situation on her own Twitter account.
“We still don’t know Christian’s whereabouts.
“I am at the earthquake site in Hatay with my Christian family.
“Such a scene is unimaginable and my heart aches for those affected.
“While I was here, I was able to pinpoint the exact location of Christian Atu’s room and found two pairs of his shoes.”
Atsu has been missing for nine days, and his friends are said to have been devastated.
Sechere said, “Yesterday, we confirmed that up to five lives were confirmed by thermography.
“However, it is said that only sight, smell and hearing can actually confirm life, and unfortunately Christian’s whereabouts could not be determined.
This is a difficult situation and we are very grateful to the Turkish and foreign rescue teams, local civilians and volunteers who have worked so hard to help and respond to the survivors.”
“However, there is an urgent need for additional resources, such as having interpreters on site.
“Things are incredibly slow and as a result many rescues are delayed and lives are lost due to lack of available resources for workers.
“It’s a shame that the club isn’t on the same page as us looking for Christians.
Their status, influence and local knowledge should be of great help.”
“We appeal to the president of the club and the mayor of Hatay city, Luthfu Savash, to provide additional resources to accelerate the rescue effort as a priority.”
The heartbreaking appeal comes after some reports that Atsushi had been rescued caused confusion.
On the night of the earthquake, a video was shown of rescuers with searchlights pushing through the rubble of the housing complex where Atsu lived.
At that moment, I heard his voice through the rubble. According to local media, the voice of Tanel Saft, the manager of Hatayshpol, was also heard.
After that, there was a report that he was saved in a miraculous rescue play, but it is now denied.
