CINEMA: American comedian Leo Gallagher has died at the age of 76, his family has announced

Gal­lagher died of organ fail­ure while receiv­ing pal­lia­tive care at his home in Palm Springs, Calif., his son-in-law told NBC News. He was sick and had mul­ti­ple heart attacks.

In 1980, Gal­lagher’s stand-up spe­cial, “An Uncen­sored Evening,” first aired on cable, accord­ing to his for­mer man­ag­er, Craig Markard.

Sledge-O-Mat­ic”, a sketch in which he hits var­i­ous foods with a large hand-made mal­let, and final­ly hits a water­mel­on, became famous.

For 15 years, Gal­lagher was the num­ber one stand-up come­di­an in Amer­i­ca, with com­e­dy spe­cials on Show­time and MTV. In his decades-long career, he host­ed 14 Show­time spe­cials and about 3,500 live com­e­dy shows, accord­ing to Gal­lagher’s website.

Towards the end of his career, he was a come­di­an, appear­ing in com­mer­cials for Geico and appear­ing in his first film, The Book of Daniel.
