Gallagher died of organ failure while receiving palliative care at his home in Palm Springs, Calif., his son-in-law told NBC News. He was sick and had multiple heart attacks.
In 1980, Gallagher’s stand-up special, “An Uncensored Evening,” first aired on cable, according to his former manager, Craig Markard.
Sledge-O-Matic”, a sketch in which he hits various foods with a large hand-made mallet, and finally hits a watermelon, became famous.
For 15 years, Gallagher was the number one stand-up comedian in America, with comedy specials on Showtime and MTV. In his decades-long career, he hosted 14 Showtime specials and about 3,500 live comedy shows, according to Gallagher’s website.
Towards the end of his career, he was a comedian, appearing in commercials for Geico and appearing in his first film, The Book of Daniel.
