Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupts again

Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, erupted again in Hawaii on Thursday, nearly a month after the announcement by federal officials.

Webcam images have confirmed lava flows inside the Halemaumau crater in the volcano’s summit caldera, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The agency said it was raising the volcano’s alert level from monitor to warning and assessing the potential danger. So far, the eruption has remained within the crater.

The volcano, located in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii, has been erupting frequently since 1983.

In 2018, a fissure eruption in its lower East Rift Zone covered 13 square miles of lava and destroyed 700 homes.

Most recently, Kilauea volcano erupted from September 2021 to last month.

In November, the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii, erupted again, and large earthquakes have continued since then. It was the first eruption in 38 years.

A month later, the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory announced that Mauna Loa’s eruption had stopped.
