Mexico’s defense ministry said on Sunday that security forces had arrested a cartel member allegedly responsible for the production of fentanyl, which has killed thousands of people in the United States.
The arrest, which took place in Sinaloa state on Thursday, comes weeks after President Joe Biden’s visit to Mexico and follows the recent high-profile arrest of cartel leader Ovidio Guzman.
He is believed to be one of the chief logistics officers of a notorious drug lord dubbed “Mayo Zambada” who co-run the powerful Sinaloa Cartel.
“It should be noted that in addition to carrying out large-scale transshipments of cocaine from Latin America to the United States, the defendant is considered a major producer of fentanyl and stimulant tablets,” the ministry said in a statement.
As per standard procedure in Mexico, his full name was withheld and named José “N”.
