Great Balls of Fire singer Jerry Lee Lewis has died at the age of 87, his representative has confirmed.

The last survivor of the golden age of rock and roll, his life was also marked by scandal and violence.

At 22, he married his 13-year-old cousin Myra Gale Brown, putting his career on hold.

A representative for Lewis described him as “perhaps the last great icon of the birth of rock and roll.”

Lewis’ spokesman Zach Farnham said in a statement, “He was in the early days with Elvis, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Fats Domino and Buddy Holly. , watching them disappear one by one, he alone witnessed and sang the birth of rock and roll.”

Lewis died at his home in DeSoto County, Mississippi, surrounded by his wife, Judith.

It comes days after gossip site TMZ announced his obituary in a hoax.
