The 573 refugees and migrants were found overnight on board âtwo overÂloaded fishÂing boats left at the merÂcy of the waves with adverse weathÂer conÂdiÂtions that were expectÂed to worsÂen conÂsidÂerÂably,â the coast guard said in a stateÂment Tuesday.
A large ship and three patrol boats assistÂed in the resÂcue, which took place about 110 km (70 miles) off Cape SpartivenÂto, on the southÂern tip of CalÂabria, it said.
Among those recovÂered was the body of a perÂson who âhad already been dead for a few days,â accordÂing to witÂnessÂes quotÂed by the coast guard.
A patrol boat transÂportÂed anothÂer perÂson in need of immeÂdiÂate medÂical attenÂtion to the CalÂabriÂan port of RocÂcelÂla Ionica.
The group includÂed 59 minors, most of whom were not accomÂpaÂnied by famÂiÂly members.
The ship was en route to the SicilÂian port of AugusÂta where the refugees and migrants will be disÂemÂbarked, the coast guard said.
The winÂter weathÂer has not been a deterÂrent for peoÂple crossÂing the MediterÂranean this year despite freezÂing temÂperÂaÂtures and rough seas.
So far this year, about 10,570 refugees and migrants have reached Europe by sea, and more than 1,400 othÂers have attemptÂed to cross by land or air, accordÂing to the InterÂnaÂtionÂal OrgaÂniÂzaÂtion for MigraÂtion (IOM).
About 229 peoÂple have died or disÂapÂpeared in their attempt to reach the continent.
