Southampton Football Club has contacted the police after their defender, Kyle Walker-Peters, received racial abuse on social media following their goalless draw with Manchester United.
The abuse came after Walker-Peters’ challenge on United’s Alejandro Garnacho during the match at Old Trafford on Sunday, which led to Garnacho being substituted in the second half.
The incident has left Southampton disgusted and disappointed and they have reported the messages to the police and social media platforms.
The club has also expressed frustration at the lack of meaningful action by social media platforms to combat such hatred.
Southampton hopes that this incident will lead to a change in attitude towards racial abuse in football and beyond.
