SamÂsung has stopped shipÂping its prodÂucts to RusÂsia after the counÂtry invadÂed Ukraine, the comÂpaÂny told Bloomberg News. The tech giant said it was monÂiÂtorÂing the âcomÂplex sitÂuÂaÂtionâ and donatÂing $6 milÂlion, includÂing $1 milÂlion of conÂsumer elecÂtronÂics, to humanÂiÂtarÂiÂan efforts in Ukraine. AccordÂing to the pubÂliÂcaÂtion, the susÂpenÂsion of shipÂments affects all SamÂsung prodÂucts, includÂing its smartÂphones, chips and othÂer conÂsumer electronics.
By haltÂing all exports of its prodÂucts to RusÂsia, SamÂsung has joined a growÂing list of comÂpaÂnies that have susÂpendÂed sales of prodÂucts and serÂvices in the counÂtry. Apple haltÂed all prodÂuct sales in response to the invaÂsion and after receivÂing a request from UkrainÂian Deputy Prime MinÂisÂter MykhaiÂlo Fedorov.
The comÂpaÂny also limÂitÂed Apple Pay, removed apps from RussÂian state-supÂportÂed media from its shop and disÂabled trafÂfic data for Maps in Ukraine to avoid putting resÂiÂdents at risk. Microsoft has also susÂpendÂed all new sales of prodÂucts and serÂvices in Russia.
The KoreÂan tech giant is the counÂtryâs leadÂing smartÂphone brand and has a 30% marÂket share, accordÂing to CounÂterÂpoint Research data. This is far more than Appleâs 13% marÂket share in Q4 2021. In addiÂtion, SamÂsung has a TV facÂtoÂry in RusÂsia, although it is not clear whether it has also stopped proÂducÂtion at the factory.
Its deciÂsion to stop shipÂments to RusÂsia comes after Fedorov sent Jong Hee Han, the CEO of SamÂsungâs SET diviÂsion, a letÂter simÂiÂlar to the one he sent to Tim Cook. In it, he asked the KoreÂan tech giant to stop supÂplyÂing the counÂtry with prodÂucts, as well as blockÂing SamÂsung Pay, SamÂsung Galaxy Store and SamÂsung Shop.
As Bloomberg notes, the South KoreÂan smartÂphones were an exempÂtion to the US govÂernÂmenÂtâs recentÂly imposed export bans. But even if SamÂsung wantÂed to conÂtinÂue shipÂping prodÂucts to RusÂsia, it would have a hard time sendÂing prodÂucts to the counÂtry anyÂway because of the shutÂdown of airÂlines and shipÂping serÂvices in the region.
