Tottenham backing Son Heung-min, subject to ‘reprehensible’ insults online

Tottenham announced on Sunday that Son Heung-min was the subject of “totally reprehensible” after receiving racist insults online.

The Premier League club has called on social media companies to take action after Son was the target of insults during their 2–0 win over West Ham United.

The striker scored four minutes after coming on as a substitute in the second half.

After the game, the Spurs tweeted: “We have received a report from the club about the reprehensible online racist insults directed at Son Heung-min during today’s match.

“We are on Sony’s side and once again call on social media companies and authorities to take action.”

Anti-racist group Kick It Out earlier this month called for “meaningful reform” after Brentford striker Ivan Toney was the target of racist insults on Instagram.

The insult came after Toney’s equalizer against Arsenal was controversial and should have been ruled out by VAR for offside against team-mate Christian Norgaard.

Toney also revealed in October that he had been the target of insults on Instagram after scoring both goals in a 2–0 win over Brighton.
