Tottenham backing Son Heung-min, subject to ‘reprehensible’ insults online

Tot­ten­ham announced on Sun­day that Son Heung-min was the sub­ject of “total­ly rep­re­hen­si­ble” after receiv­ing racist insults online.

The Pre­mier League club has called on social media com­pa­nies to take action after Son was the tar­get of insults dur­ing their 2–0 win over West Ham United.

The strik­er scored four min­utes after com­ing on as a sub­sti­tute in the sec­ond half.

After the game, the Spurs tweet­ed: “We have received a report from the club about the rep­re­hen­si­ble online racist insults direct­ed at Son Heung-min dur­ing today’s match.

“We are on Sony’s side and once again call on social media com­pa­nies and author­i­ties to take action.”

Anti-racist group Kick It Out ear­li­er this month called for “mean­ing­ful reform” after Brent­ford strik­er Ivan Toney was the tar­get of racist insults on Instagram.

The insult came after Toney’s equal­iz­er against Arse­nal was con­tro­ver­sial and should have been ruled out by VAR for off­side against team-mate Chris­t­ian Norgaard.

Toney also revealed in Octo­ber that he had been the tar­get of insults on Insta­gram after scor­ing both goals in a 2–0 win over Brighton.
