A 15-year-old boy who was surfing underground in Brooklyn has died after falling from a train, police said.
A teenager fell from a southbound J train on the Williamsburg Bridge around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the New York Police Department said in a statement.
The child fell under the train and hit an electrified third rail, the statement added.
Police rushed to the scene, but the boy was pronounced dead.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which oversees public transit in the New York metropolitan area, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Thursday’s incident comes after several reported cases of underground surfing this year and last year.
In June, a 15-year-old boy who was underground surfing on a train in New York was seriously injured after hitting his head.
Police said at the time that the boy had suffered a “severe head injury” after hitting his head on an “unknown object” while he was believed to be riding on top of a car that entered the station.
Earlier that month, a video posted on social media showed about eight people underground surfing, running and dancing on a northbound J train passing over the Williamsburg Bridge. .
Thursday’s incident isn’t the first time underground surfing has been deadly. In October 2021, a 32-year-old man died after also falling onto the tracks while boarding a J train over the Williamsburg Bridge.
