U.S. : Military helicopter crashes in Alaska, 2 soldiers injured

Two sol­diers were injured after a mil­i­tary heli­copter over­turned in Tal­keet­na, Alas­ka, offi­cials said Monday.

The US mil­i­tary said in a state­ment that the sol­dier had been tak­en to a local hos­pi­tal, where he was treat­ed and discharged.

An Army AH-64D Apache heli­copter was dam­aged in a crash dur­ing take­off on Sun­day. A deci­sion on whether the heli­copter can be lift­ed will be made this week­end, spokesman John Pen­nell said in an email.

Oth­er details of the crash were not imme­di­ate­ly known, but Pen­nell said a post-crash inves­ti­ga­tion by the Army Com­bat Readi­ness Cen­ter would shed light on the cause. The inves­tiga­tive team is expect­ed to arrive this weekend.

The Apache was one of four heli­copters from the 25th Attack Bat­tal­ion at Fort Wain­wright near Fair­banks head­ing for Joint Base Elmen­dorf-Richard­son in Anchor­age for train­ing. The four heli­copters stopped at Tal­keet­na to refuel.

Tal­keet­na is about 110 kilo­me­ters north of Anchorage.
