One witness has been taken into custody and another is in critical condition after a U‑Haul van ran over four people in Brooklyn on Monday, officials said.
New York police stopped the van with the Arizona number and detained the driver on Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue just before noon, said two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter.
Three people riding a moped were hit, and a pedestrian, a man in his 30s, was also hit.
One was taken to a Lutheran hospital in critical condition, while the other suffered minor injuries.
Police are investigating a possible motive.
Four senior police officers identified the driver as Weng Sor, a 62-year-old Asian man. There are no signs of a terrorist attack so far, but an investigation is ongoing, according to those involved.
New York Governor Kathy Horchul tweeted Monday afternoon that she had been briefed on the situation and that her team was coordinating with police.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams was also briefed on the matter, his press secretary Fabian Levy tweeted.
“A suspect has been detained, but the NYPD continues to investigate. “At this time, there are no additional credible threats,” Levy said.
