Wayne Rooney could be given a second chance at Everton as Frank Lampard’s future is in jeopardy.

The former Goodison prodigy is one of manager Fahad Mosiri’s list of possible replacements for Lampard after Tuesday’s 4–1 humiliation at home to Brighton.

The Toffees are 18th in the standings, in the relegation zone, with 15 points, just three points off the bottom of the table.

Rooney, who has played for Everton twice, is being considered alongside former Belgium manager Roberto Martinez.

The Spaniard is the first of five managers to be sacked after Mosir started buying a 94% stake in the club in 2016.

Sean Dyche, who has been unemployed since being sacked by Burnley nine months ago, and Celtic forward Ange Postecoglu have been mentioned as other options.

But Rooney, now DC United manager, knows that Mosiri and chairman Bill Kenwright are people who can help motivate fans disillusioned with the club.

Rooney is said to have had talks with Ken Wright 12 months ago when he tried to prevent Derby from being relegated to the Premier League.

Lampard is fighting to defend his job after a massive walkout by Toffees fans during their loss to Brighton.

He will remain in charge for Friday’s FA Cup third round clash against Manchester United.

But the pressure is great, and if you make a big mistake, you can pay a big price.

Everton are again in trouble after Aston Villa refused to sign striker Danny Ings on loan.
