Croatian footballer Marin Cacic, 23, sadly died during a training session.

The sad news was also report­ed by the BiH news site Klix that “his doc­tors fought unsuc­cess­ful­ly for his life”.

It is report­ed that the cen­ter-back “sud­den­ly col­lapsed dur­ing train­ing” after suf­fer­ing a “heart attack”.

Cacic start­ed his career with youth teams in Rije­ka, made a stint in Italy with low­er league team Iser­nia, before end­ing up at NK Nehaj, based in the town of Senj.

They play in the sec­ond lev­el of the foot­ball league sys­tem in Croatia.

Trib­utes poured into the Face­book post for the young man.

Zoran Meter wrote: “I do not know this boy or his par­ents, but I can­not hide my tears in the face of this tragedy. Sin­cere con­do­lences to the parents.”

Robi Fonovic added: “Rest in the peace of God”, and San­dra Biondic Fur­ri­er asked God to give the fam­i­ly “the strength to endure this great sor­row and this pain”.

Anoth­er of his for­mer clubs, the Bosn­ian club NK Jedin­st­vo, also paid trib­ute to Cacic by writ­ing on his web­site: “Rest in peace, Sailor, for­ev­er in our hearts”.
