Donny van de Beek will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury during Manchester United’s win over Bournemouth.
The Dutch midfielder limped off after being tackled by Marcos Senesi in the 47th minute on 3 January.
At the press conference ahead of the Manchester derby, Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag revealed that his worst fears had come true.
“It’s a knee issue. In the long term, I’ll be back by the start of preseason. He’ll be out for the rest of the season,” Ten Hag said.
“Everyone thinks of him, it’s terrible. It was a bad tackle, a bad injury.
“Our thoughts are with the players.
We make good things and you want to be a part of it.
“The good news is that in the long term he will be back and his knee will be stable.”
Meanwhile, United were unable to complete the signing of Wout Wegor in time for Saturday’s lunchtime derby.
The loan move of the Burnley player from Besiktas is nearing completion.
But I have to finish it before noon today.
Tenhag said: “I think we are close, so he won’t be available.”
The Red Devils boss has been looking for another striker since Cristiano Ronaldo was released from his contract during the World Cup.
With Anthony Martial injured, he wanted to keep Weghorst on the bench, at least against Manchester City.
