Families ‘Avalanched’ by Intoxicated Fans, Say Uruguayan Players

According to Uruguay defender Jose Gimenez, the players’ families were targeted by inebriated Colombian fans sitting close to them.

“This is an embarrassment, there wasn’t one police officer to control them. We had to go and defend our own just because they can’t control their drinking,” Gimenez said in a TV interview after the match.

Nunez was seen consoling his young daughter on the field after the melee had subsided, as fellow Uruguayan players like Ronald Araujo also clashed with supporters in the stands.

The unsavory scenes capped off a fiercely contested semi-final clash that saw Colombia hang on for a narrow 1–0 victory to advance to the Copa America final against Argentina.
