West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta is facing charges from the Football Association (FA) for allegedly breaching betting rules. This development throws his proposed €93 million (£80 million) summer transfer to Manchester City into serious doubt.

The FA investigation centers on suspicious betting activity surrounding three yellow cards Paqueta received in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

The probe began after unusual betting patterns emerged related to a yellow card Paqueta was shown in stoppage time during West Ham’s opening-day draw against AFC Bournemouth last August. The FA also examined two other yellow cards issued to the Brazilian — one against Aston Villa and another against Leeds United.

Paqueta, 26, maintains his innocence and has cooperated with the FA’s investigation. He was interviewed in September 2023 and granted access to his phone for examination the following month. While the exact charges haven’t been disclosed, it’s understood Paqueta is not accused of placing the bets himself.

However, a potential ban resulting from these charges would significantly impact his transfer value and disrupt both West Ham’s plans for the player and Manchester City’s pursuit of Bernardo Silva’s replacement.
