Lionel Messi and Neymar topped the list of players to apologize to the club’s Ultras after their Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
The home side were on the back foot for most of the match at the Parc des Princes and Kingsley Coman scored early in the second half to seal the first leg of the last 16. The result leaves Christophe Galtier’s team on the back foot heading into next month’s second leg.
So far this year, they have lost five in all competitions and are on the verge of ending the season after another disappointing performance in Europe.
In the past six weeks, PSG have lost Ligue 1 to Lens, Rennes and Monaco, and were knocked out of the Coupe de France in Marseille last week. It was also brought into a draw at home to Lance.
For that reason, there was a slightly uncomfortable atmosphere between the players and the fans who continued to cheer for Bayern from beginning to end. Yet the German team outperformed their opponents for most of the match.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side dominated the first 70 minutes, but the dominance was only reflected in Coman’s goal. The introduction of Kylian Mbappe, who had been sidelined due to a recent muscle injury, helped turn the tide for PSG in the final stages of the game.
However, the goal was checked for offside by VAR and was correctly ruled out.
After the game, Messi and Neymar stayed on the pitch with PSG’s squad to speak to the club’s Ultras. It was an apology for their performance and defeat, and a feeling of gratitude to the club fans who supported them throughout the match.
PSG have never lifted the Champions League in their history and losing to Bayern Munich in the 2020 final, with former academy player Coman scoring again, was their best result in the competition so far.
