The music world is mourning the loss of Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, who passed away at the young age of 34 in his hometown.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed the artist’s death on Thursday, though the cause remains unknown pending an autopsy scheduled for Friday.
Rich Homie Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, rose to fame in the mid-2010s with hits like “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).”
He earned multiple nominations at the BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, cementing his status as one of Atlanta’s most prominent modern rappers.

News of Rich Homie Quan’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across the hip-hop world. Fellow Atlanta artist 2 Chainz took to Instagram, expressing his condolences and recalling plans to shoot a music video together. Singer Jacquees called Quan a “legend” and said, “I love you for Life.”
Producer Alex Tumay, who collaborated with the rapper over the years, described Quan as “one of the nicest people I ever worked with and a true artist.” Quavo, another acclaimed Atlanta rapper, posted a photo of himself with Quan and other artists, writing, “May God be with us, never saw this being apart of our journey.”

Rich Homie Quan’s life story was one of resilience and determination. Born in 1989, he was raised by a single parent and originally dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. However, he encountered legal troubles in his early 20s, spending 15 months in jail for his involvement in a series of burglaries.
After his release, Quan threw himself wholeheartedly into his music career, ultimately finding mainstream success and becoming a prominent figure in the Atlanta rap scene. His openness about his past struggles and his dedication to his craft endeared him to fans and fellow artists alike.
