Megan Thee Stal­lion took the stage at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards with a nod to one of pop music’s most icon­ic moments — Brit­ney Spears’ snake dance at the 2001 VMAs. 

How­ev­er, Megan’s recre­ation of the moment did­n’t go as smooth­ly as Brit­ney’s, as the rap­per pan­icked when the live snake began slith­er­ing around her crotch.

As the show returned from a com­mer­cial break, the VMAs played a clip of Brit­ney’s 2001 per­for­mance of “I’m a Slave 4 U” with the python wrapped around her. 

Megan then appeared on stage, wear­ing a near­ly iden­ti­cal cos­tume to Brit­ney’s, with a live snake coiled around her arms.

Megan Recreates Britney’s Iconic Snake Moment

Megan’s expres­sion quick­ly turned to one of dread as the snake began mov­ing in an alarm­ing way. “Okay! Okay! Stop the music, stop the music!” Megan fretted.

“I’m just play­ing. Come get this snake. I don’t know this snake. This snake don’t know me.”

Even­tu­al­ly, Megan became so afraid that she let out a pro­longed scream of “Oh my God!” as some­one final­ly removed the snake from her. 

“I tried to hold it down for Brit­ney,” Megan told the audi­ence, earn­ing applause before intro­duc­ing the next presenter.

Megan’s Terrified Reaction Compared to Britney’s Confidence

Fans were quick to praise Megan’s attempt to recre­ate the icon­ic moment, with many not­ing the stark con­trast between Megan’s ter­ri­fied reac­tion and Brit­ney’s con­fi­dence in han­dling the snake dur­ing her 2001 performance.

One view­er observed, “Megan being ter­ri­fied just makes it insane to believe a then 19-year-old Brit­ney Spears man­aged to pull off that per­for­mance car­ry­ing that snake.”
