This heartbreaking story details the selfless act of 11-year-old Mackenzie Cornell, who drowned while attempting to rescue her younger sister at a hotel pool in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
Mackenzie, a beloved fourth-grader described as a “sweetheart” by teachers, was attending a pool party at the Quality Inn when her 9‑year-old sister became distressed in the deep end.
Tragically, with no lifeguard on duty, Mackenzie bravely entered the water to help her sister but lost her own life in the process.
Her aunt, Helen Cornell, spoke of the incident, stating, “Her little sister went into the deep end… and her big sister went to save her.” The hotel’s website reportedly included a disclaimer regarding the absence of a lifeguard.
A vigil was held at Mackenzie’s elementary school, Bloom Vernon Elementary, where she was remembered as a kind and helpful girl who loved her family, pets, and all things girly. Her obituary described her as a “girly girl” who cherished her family and pets.
