A group of youth hikers in Utah were transported to local hospitals after a lightning strike occurred near their hiking group. The incident took place in Sevier County, Utah, where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints youth group from Salina was hiking.

Accord¬≠ing to the Sevi¬≠er Coun¬≠ty Sher¬≠iff, Nathan Cur¬≠tis, the group was in the east¬≠ern part of the coun¬≠ty around 1:45 pm when a light rain began, and light¬≠ning struck the ground nearby.

Cur¬≠tis stat¬≠ed that approx¬≠i¬≠mate¬≠ly 50 youth mem¬≠bers ‚Äúfelt the shock of the light¬≠ning,‚ÄĚ with sev¬≠en of them expe¬≠ri¬≠enc¬≠ing ‚Äúmed¬≠ical con¬≠cerns due to the electrocution.‚ÄĚ

Two of the youth hikers had serious symptoms and were airlifted by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi, Utah. The remaining five were transported by ambulance to Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield and Gunnison Valley Hospital in Gunnison.

None of the injuries were con¬≠sid¬≠ered life-threat¬≠en¬≠ing, and the oth¬≠er hik¬≠ers were returned to their fam¬≠i¬≠lies in Sali¬≠na, a city locat¬≠ed 139 miles south of Salt Lake City.

The quick response and med¬≠ical atten¬≠tion pro¬≠vid¬≠ed to the affect¬≠ed youth hik¬≠ers like¬≠ly pre¬≠vent¬≠ed more seri¬≠ous out¬≠comes from the unex¬≠pect¬≠ed light¬≠ning strike.

Authorities stressed the importance of being prepared for unpredictable weather conditions when engaging in outdoor activities, especially with large groups.
