A devastating in-flight medical emergency resulted in the death of an 8‑year-old girl, Sydney Weston, on a United Airlines flight (operated by SkyWest) traveling from Joplin, Missouri to Chicago on Thursday, June 13th, 2024.

Approximately 45 minutes into the flight, Sydney became ill and unresponsive. Her family promptly notified the flight crew, who initiated medical assistance. In response to the emergency, the flight diverted to Peoria, Illinois, where paramedics were waiting.

Tragically, Sydney was not breathing and had no pulse upon disembarkation. Despite resuscitation efforts at a nearby hospital, she was pronounced deceased shortly after 8:00 am.

The cause of Sydney’s death will be determined by a scheduled autopsy.

She was vacationing with her family when the incident occurred. The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office and coroner have extended their heartfelt condolences to the Weston family and everyone affected by this heartbreaking event.
