Children Left in Hot Car Lead to Arkansas Couple Facing Murder Charge

Deja and Justin Rollins, a cou­ple from Arkansas, have been charged with mur­der after their 2‑year-old son, Jay’­Di­en Rollins, trag­i­cal­ly died from heat exhaus­tion. The inci­dent occurred after they alleged­ly left their four chil­dren, rang­ing in age from 2 to 10, unat­tend­ed in a hot car out­side Arkansas Chil­dren’s Hospital.

Prior Neglect Charges and Disturbing Discoveries

This inci­dent was­n’t an iso­lat­ed event. The cou­ple was already fac­ing child abuse and neglect charges before this tragedy. Author­i­ties allege they ini­tial­ly refused to dis­close the chil­dren’s where­abouts, who were lat­er dis­cov­ered suf­fer­ing from heat exhaus­tion inside the vehi­cle parked at the hospital.

The inves­ti­ga­tion took a dis­turb­ing turn when offi­cers found a mal­nour­ished dog at the Rollins’ res­i­dence in Jack­sonville. The dog was sub­se­quent­ly tak­en into care by ani­mal services.

Multiple Charges Highlight Pattern of Neglect

In total, Deja and Justin Rollins now face a stag­ger­ing 13 charges. These include:

  • Five counts of first-degree domes­tic battery
  • Five counts of neglect of a vul­ner­a­ble person
  • Five counts of endan­ger­ing the wel­fare of a minor
  • One count of ani­mal cruelty
  • One count of obstruct­ing gov­ern­ment operations

A Sobering Reminder of Child Safety

Despite med­ical inter­ven­tion, the 2‑year-old suc­cumbed to his injuries the fol­low­ing day. This heart­break­ing inci­dent serves as a stark reminder of the dan­gers of leav­ing chil­dren unat­tend­ed in vehi­cles, espe­cial­ly dur­ing hot weath­er. Even a short amount of time can have life-threat­en­ing consequences.
