A homeless man, 35-year-old Steven Johnson, has been arrested for attempted murder and assault following a brutal attack near the Astor Place Cube in New York City.

Unprovoked Attack in Busy Area:

Police say the incident occurred on Thursday evening around 5:30 pm in Lafayette Square. Johnson allegedly approached a 30-year-old man from behind and slashed his neck with an unknown sharp object. Witnesses described a horrific scene with the victim bleeding profusely.

“There was nothing leading up to it,” said witness Michael Picardi. “Just out of nowhere.”

Arrest and Ongoing Concerns:

Johnson fled but was apprehended in the East Village on Saturday night. His last known address was a homeless shelter in Midtown. The victim was hospitalized for treatment.

This incident underscores public safety anxieties in New York City. While Johnson’s arrest brings some solace, it highlights the intertwined issues of homelessness and crime that local authorities must confront.
