President Joe Biden is set to have discussions with his family this weekend about the future of his re-election campaign at Camp David.

The getaway will provide an opportunity for reflection amid concerns from Democrats following Biden’s poor debate performance against Donald Trump.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are scheduled to visit the 125-acre presidential retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland on Sunday.

While the trip was pre-planned, it will serve as a chance to talk through options with his wife and children away from the pressures of the campaign trail.

Reports indicate the discussions will be informal, rather than a formal meeting to make firm decisions. But with Biden’s team insisting he remains the party’s best hope of beating Trump, the talks could impact whether he seeks another term.

Biden’s deputy campaign manager argued dropping out would only benefit Trump by causing “weeks of chaos.”

However, some Democrats have expressed unease privately after the president struggled in Thursday’s debate. Polls also show support for Biden dropping and calls have emerged for him to pass the torch to a younger candidate.

The eventual outcome rests largely on input from Jill Biden, who aides say wields the most influence. With the future of the Democratic party at stake, the family discussions at Camp David could shape the 2024 election.
