Arrest in Decades-Old Cold Case
A woman has been arrestÂed in conÂnecÂtion with a nearÂly 37-year-old cold case in which a newÂborn baby was found dead in a CalÂiÂforÂnia dumpster.
MelisÂsa Jean Allen AviÂla, now 55, was takÂen into cusÂtody on a murÂder charge and booked into the LarÂry D. Smith CorÂrecÂtionÂal FacilÂiÂty on $1.1 milÂlion bail.
Newborn Discovered in Dumpster
AviÂla is accused of leavÂing her deceased baby girl in a dumpÂster behind a busiÂness on the 5400 block of La SierÂra Ave. in RiverÂside, CalÂiÂforÂnia, in OctoÂber 1987 when she was 19-years-old.
A man rumÂmagÂing for recyÂclables disÂcovÂered the baby, and the death was ruled a homiÂcide by the RiverÂside CounÂty CoroÂnerâs Office.
Reopening the Cold Case
The case had sat cold for over 37 years, but in 2020, it was reopened and AviÂla was idenÂtiÂfied as the babyâs mothÂer through DNA samples.
DetecÂtives have no reaÂson to believe the babyâs father had any crimÂiÂnal responÂsiÂbilÂiÂty in the childâs murder.
Extradition and Arrest
AviÂla was evenÂtuÂalÂly found to be livÂing in ShelÂby, North CarÂoliÂna. She was takÂen into cusÂtody and extraÂditÂed to California.
âThanks to the perÂsisÂtent efforts of our invesÂtiÂgaÂtors and partÂners, this vicÂtim now has an idenÂtiÂty, bringÂing resÂoÂluÂtion to the case,â RiverÂside Police Chief LarÂry GonÂzaÂlez said.
AviÂlaâs arraignÂment is slatÂed for SepÂtemÂber 9, and she faces a murÂder charge for the decades-old crime.
