Abuse of Trust and Betrayal of Ethics
Petra Shasha, a 28-year-old forÂmer trainee teacher, has been found guilty of sexÂuÂalÂly abusÂing, groomÂing, and indeÂcentÂly assaultÂing a 15-year-old stuÂdent at a high school in the AusÂtralian CapÂiÂtal Territory.
The court heard how Shasha betrayed her posiÂtion of trust and authorÂiÂty to culÂtiÂvate an inapÂproÂpriÂate relaÂtionÂship with the young boy.
Premeditated Grooming Tactics
ProsÂeÂcuÂtors revealed that Shasha sysÂtemÂatÂiÂcalÂly groomed the 15-year-old stuÂdent by showÂerÂing him with gifts, monÂey, and designÂer clothes.
She would also give him lifts and spend time with him in pubÂlic, careÂfulÂly planÂning how to avoid detecÂtion of their illicÂit relationship.
Indecent Assault and Explicit Communications
The court heard that Shasha indeÂcentÂly assaultÂed the boy on two occaÂsions, once in a departÂment store changÂing room and anothÂer time in a car.
She also admitÂted to sendÂing the 15-year-old numerÂous explicÂit videos and phoÂtos of herÂself, though she claimed to have a âreaÂsonÂable beliefâ he was oldÂer at the time.
Sentencing and Ongoing Proceedings
Shasha was found guilty of perÂsisÂtent sexÂuÂal abuse of a child, supÂplyÂing pornoÂgraphÂic mateÂrÂiÂal to a young perÂson, groomÂing, and comÂmitÂting an act of indeÂcenÂcy on a child. She remains on bail and will be senÂtenced in FebÂruÂary 2025.
