California dive boat captain’s negligence led to a deadly fire in 2019, claiming 34 lives. Jerry Boylan, 70, was sentenced to 4 years in prison for his role in the disaster, which marked the worst maritime accident in recent US history.

Boylan was convicted of seaman’s manslaughter after a jury found him responsible for safety failures that contributed to the fire.

The judge acknowledged Boylan’s regret but highlighted the importance of safety regulations and the high cost of negligence in the maritime industry.
