(Nantucket, MA) — In a surprising turn of events, Florida-based physician Scott Anthony Burke has avoided jail time after being caught with drugs, guns, and alleged prostitutes on his luxury yacht in Nantucket.

The 70-year-old retired doctor pleaded guilty to four charges stemming from the September 2023 incident, including possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm without a license. However, his terminal cancer diagnosis played a key role in the lenient sentencing.

According to the police report, authorities received a call about a 33-year-old woman overdosing on Burke’s 82-foot yacht, the “Jess Conn.” When they raided the vessel, they discovered about 43 grams of cocaine, 14 grams of ketamine, a .380 pistol, and several high-capacity magazines.

Prostitutes were also allegedly found on board, though Burke did not face any prostitution charges. The woman who overdosed told police that the group had been “doing drugs all weekend” and that some guests were even filming pornographic content.

Despite the damning evidence, Burke’s attorney was able to negotiate a plea deal that resulted in just one year of probation. A spokesperson for the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office cited Burke’s age, lack of criminal history, and terminal cancer diagnosis as factors in the lenient sentencing.

The retired physician had previously practiced in Colorado and was the CEO of a medical lien services company. He now resides in the ultra-exclusive Ocean Reef Club in Florida, where residents are reported to have “more money than freaking god.”
