A 26-year-old Florida man, Stephen Roland Bodley, was convicted last week of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12 after he confessed to the crime during a job interview to become a police officer.

Bodley was conducting an interview with the Apopka Police Department in 2021 when he took a voice stress analysis exam. During the exam, he admitted to sexually assaulting a 9‑year-old girl on three separate occasions when he was 12–13 years old.

According to court documents, Bodley described the abuse as “playing sex games” with the victim, stating that she “didn’t fully understand what was happening.” He claimed he had a “little addiction” to watching porn at the time.

The victim’s mother said she had known Bodley since he was a baby and never suspected him of such crimes. The victim initially said she could not remember the assaults, but later confirmed Bodley’s account after he described the incidents in detail.

Prosecutors said Bodley’s own admissions during the police interview were crucial evidence that led to his conviction by a jury last week. He is set to be sentenced on June 24.

This shocking case highlights the importance of thorough background checks and vetting procedures for those seeking positions of authority, such as law enforcement. Bodley’s disturbing confession during the hiring process ultimately led to his downfall, preventing him from obtaining a job that could have placed him in close proximity to vulnerable children.
