A trag­ic shoot­ing in Char­lotte, North Car­oli­na, has left four law enforce­ment offi­cers dead and four oth­ers injured after a sus­pect opened fire dur­ing an attempt­ed war­rant service.

The offi­cers, mem­bers of the U.S. Mar­shals Task Force, were inves­ti­gat­ing a felon want­ed for pos­sess­ing a firearm when the inci­dent occurred in the 5000 block of Gal­way Drive.

Among the deceased is Offi­cer Joshua Eyer, a six-year vet­er­an of the Char­lotte-Meck­len­burg Police Depart­ment, who suc­cumbed to his injuries fol­low­ing the shootout. 

The inci­dent marks one of the dead­liest attacks on law enforce­ment in recent U.S. history.

Author­i­ties have con­firmed that the sus­pect was killed dur­ing the con­fronta­tion, though the inves­ti­ga­tion remains ongoing.
