Capture of a Fugitive
One of AmerÂiÂcaâs most wantÂed fugiÂtives, AntoÂnio âEl DiaÂbloâ Riano, has been arrestÂed in MexÂiÂco, bringÂing an end to a 20-year manÂhunt. The 72-year-old OaxÂaÂca native was charged with first-degree murÂder in 2004 for the shootÂing death of a 25-year-old man in Ohio.
Rianoâs Hiding in Plain Sight
After evadÂing jusÂtice for two decades, Riano was found workÂing as a police offiÂcer in his homeÂtown of ZapotiÂtÂlan PalÂmas, MexÂiÂco. When asked why he had become a police offiÂcer, Riano replied in SpanÂish, âI wantÂed to help the peoÂple of Mexico.â
Cooperation Between Law Enforcement
The arrest was the result of a colÂlabÂoÂraÂtive effort between the U.S. MarÂshals SerÂvice, the ButÂler CounÂty ProsÂeÂcuÂtorâs Office, and the U.S. DepartÂment of JusÂtice. Michael T. Gmoser, the ButÂler CounÂty ProsÂeÂcuÂtor, praised the joint effort, statÂing, âThis type of appreÂhenÂsion would not be posÂsiÂble withÂout the coopÂerÂaÂtion and due diliÂgence of both the ProsÂeÂcuÂtorâs Office invesÂtiÂgaÂtors, the UnitÂed States MarÂshal SerÂvice, and the UnitÂed States DepartÂment of Justice.â
