A 36-year-old Dalit woman in India has request¬≠ed per¬≠mis¬≠sion for euthana¬≠sia after she was alleged¬≠ly gang-raped by three men, includ¬≠ing one she knew.

The victim claims she was drugged and unable to fight back, and is now seeking to end her life as she fears the delayed investigation has rendered the medical evidence inconclusive.

The incident occurred on May 14 in a village near Puranpur in the district of Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. The woman, whose identity has been withheld, wrote to Indian President Droupadi Murmu following the alleged sex crime. She accused a man named Mohammad Azim, 35, and two of his colleagues of the attack.

Despite fil¬≠ing a com¬≠plaint with the local police sta¬≠tion, the vic¬≠tim‚Äôs request was ini¬≠tial¬≠ly reject¬≠ed. It was only after she sub¬≠mit¬≠ted a writ¬≠ten com¬≠plaint to the Super¬≠in¬≠ten¬≠dent of Police that a First Infor¬≠ma¬≠tion Report (FIR) was lodged on May 24 ‚ÄĒ ten days after the alleged incident.

The victim has criticized the authorities for charging the accused under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to rape, instead of Section 376D, which specifically addresses gang rape. She fears the delay has compromised the medical evidence, further adding to her trauma.

India has struggled with high rates of sexual violence, with the National Crime Records Bureau reporting 28,046 rape cases in 2020 and 31,677 in 2021. Dalit women, who face discrimination due to their marginalised social status, are disproportionately affected.

Despite legal reforms, many sur¬≠vivors con¬≠tin¬≠ue to encounter sig¬≠nif¬≠i¬≠cant bar¬≠ri¬≠ers in the jus¬≠tice sys¬≠tem, includ¬≠ing delayed inves¬≠ti¬≠ga¬≠tions and insen¬≠si¬≠tive han¬≠dling by author¬≠i¬≠ties. The vic¬≠tim‚Äôs des¬≠per¬≠ate plea for euthana¬≠sia high¬≠lights the urgent need for bet¬≠ter sup¬≠port and pro¬≠tec¬≠tion for vic¬≠tims of sex¬≠u¬≠al crimes in India.
