A Georgia grand jury has indicted Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan migrant living illegally in the U.S., on 10 counts including malice murder and kidnapping in the shocking killing of nursing student Laken Riley.

Ibarra is accused of murdering Riley, a 22-year-old University of Georgia student, while she was out for a run on the UGA campus in Athens on February 22. The grand jury indictment charges Ibarra with:

Malice murder
Two counts of kidnapping with bodily injury
Two counts of aggravated assault with intent to rape
Two counts of aggravated battery
Obstructing or hindering a person from making a 911 call
Tampering with evidence
Being a “peeping tom“

The indictment paints a disturbing picture of the alleged crime, with Ibarra accused of not only killing Riley, but also kidnapping her and assaulting her with the intent to rape. He is further charged with trying to prevent someone from calling 911 and tampering with evidence.

Ibarra’s status as an illegal immigrant from Venezuela is likely to add an additional layer of controversy to this high-profile case. Immigration status has become a contentious political issue, and the killing of an American student by an undocumented migrant is sure to reignite debates around border security and immigration reform.

The “peeping tom” charge also indicates Ibarra may have been surveilling or stalking UGA staff or students prior to the alleged murder. This could suggest a pattern of predatory behavior that law enforcement will likely investigate further.
