Indonesia : 4 dead after floating restaurant plunges into sea

At least four peo­ple have died after a float­ing restau­rant col­lapsed into the sea after an earth­quake struck Indone­sia today.

A 5.5‑magnitude earth­quake struck Jaya­pu­ra, Papua on Fri­day after­noon, caus­ing the Ciri­ta Cafe in Papua to collapse.

The four women were buried under the rub­ble after fail­ing to escape the col­lapsed build­ing in time.

Res­cue work­ers found him life­less in Jaya­pu­ra Bay.

Oth­er infra­struc­ture was also dam­aged, includ­ing a shop­ping cen­ter in Jaya­pu­ra. Sev­er­al res­i­dents were also injured.

The quake struck at 13:28 local time, 1 km south­west of Jaya­pu­ra and 10 km deep, accord­ing to the Indone­sian Mete­o­ro­log­i­cal, Cli­mat­ic and Geo­phys­i­cal Agency.

It is a coun­try strad­dling the “Ring of Fire” where most of the world’s vol­canic erup­tions and earth­quakes occur.

It comes days after an earth­quake in Turkey killed at least 15,000 peo­ple in the coun­try and neigh­bor­ing Syria.

On Tues­day, a mag­ni­tude 7.6 earth­quake hit the bot­tom of the Ban­da Sea near Indone­sia and was also felt in Dar­win, Australia.

The earth­quake dam­aged some local build­ings in Indone­sia and injured one person.
