In a tense courtroom scene, a Massachusetts judge scolded defendant Karen Read for appearing to make a face during a discussion over key trial documents as the jury continued to deliberate her fate in a sensational murder case.

The video feed showed Read, who is accused of second-degree murder for allegedly running over her boyfriend with her SUV, seated and obscured by her defense lawyer as he addressed the judge. Suddenly, the judge, Beverly Cannone, stopped the proceedings and directly confronted Read, asking, “This is funny, Ms. Read?”

The judge’s stern rebuke came as the jury entered its second day of deliberations in the high-profile case. Read faces up to life in prison if convicted of killing her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, in January 2022.

The judge’s reprimand was a striking moment in the trial, underscoring the intense scrutiny on Read as she awaits the jury’s decision. The incident also highlights the judge’s efforts to maintain decorum and ensure the proceedings are taken seriously, even as the pressure mounts for the defendant.

With the jury still out, the outcome of the case remains uncertain. But the judge’s swift action in admonishing Read for her apparent lack of gravity serves as a reminder of the gravity of the charges she faces and the solemn nature of the judicial process.
