French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the “scourge of anti-Semitism” threatening schools in France after a 12-year-old Jewish girl was gang-raped by a group of boys who accused her of hiding her religion from her boyfriend.

The horrific attack occurred in a Paris suburb, where the girl said she was grabbed by three youths, one of whom was her ex-boyfriend, while sitting in a public square with her current boyfriend.

The boys allegedly dragged her to an abandoned hangar and forced her to undergo anal and vaginal rape, fellatio, and death threats while making anti-Semitic remarks.

Two 13-year-old suspects have been charged with gang rape, anti-Semitic insults, violence, and issuing death threats. A 12-year-old was also charged with anti-Semitic insults, violence, and death threats, but not with rape.

The leaders of France’s Jewish community, which is the largest outside of Israel and the U.S., expressed horror over the attack. Macron called for “dialogue” about racism and hatred of Jews in schools to prevent such “hateful speech with serious consequences” from “infiltrating” classrooms.

Anti-Semitic acts in France have tripled in the first months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, with over 12% occurring in schools.
