Rochester Hills, Michigan — A horrific shooting unfolded on Saturday at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, leaving eight people injured.

Authorities are investigating the motive behind the rampage by a 42-year-old male suspect with no prior criminal history but suspected mental health issues.

The shooting erupted around 5:00 PM as families enjoyed the summer afternoon. The unidentified gunman reportedly fired 28 rounds before fleeing the scene.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard detailed the incident, including the critical condition of an 8‑year-old boy shot in the head and the injuries sustained by his mother and brother.

Thankfully, the quick response by law enforcement may have prevented further tragedy. Police located the suspect at a nearby residence where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a brief standoff.

A search of the suspect’s home revealed a semi-automatic rifle and another handgun.

Local officials, including Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, expressed their condolences and vowed for the community’s recovery.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson echoed these sentiments while highlighting the ongoing gun violence crisis impacting the nation’s children and families.
