Nicole Mitchell, a Democratic state senator from Minnesota, has been charged with first-degree burglary after allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes.

According to court documents, Mitchell, a former Twin Cities meteorologist and Air Force veteran, was arrested early Monday morning after police responded to a burglary call.

The charges state that Mitchell, dressed in all black clothing and a black hat, was found in the basement of her stepmother’s home. She admitted to police that she had driven from Woodbury at around 1 a.m. with the intention of retrieving her late father’s belongings, including pictures, a flannel shirt, and ashes.

Mitchell’s father passed away last year, and she claimed that her stepmother had ceased all contact with the family and refused to give her the items.

During the incident, police discovered a flashlight covered with a black sock and a backpack containing two laptops, a cellphone, Mitchell’s Minnesota driver’s license, Senate identification, and miscellaneous Tupperware.

One of the laptops appeared to belong to Mitchell’s stepmother, which she claimed was given to her “way back when,” a statement refuted by her stepmother.

Mitchell, who represents the cities of Woodbury and Maplewood in the Minnesota Senate, is currently serving her first term. She previously worked as a meteorologist for KSTP-TV and Minnesota Public Radio and is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, commanding the 126th Weather Flight.

Mitchell has been charged with one count of felony first-degree burglary and is awaiting further legal proceedings.
