In a sur¬≠pris¬≠ing turn of events, the run¬≠ner-up for the Miss Teen USA 2024 title, Stephanie Skin¬≠ner, has declined the crown after the win¬≠ner, Uma¬≠Sofia Sri¬≠vas¬≠ta¬≠va, stepped down last week.

Skin¬≠ner, a 19-year-old from New Hart¬≠ford, New York and a ris¬≠ing junior at the Uni¬≠ver¬≠si¬≠ty of Penn¬≠syl¬≠va¬≠ni¬≠a‚Äôs Whar¬≠ton School, told the New York Post that she ‚Äúulti¬≠mate¬≠ly came to the deci¬≠sion to decline‚ÄĚ the Miss Teen USA title.

‚ÄúI did¬≠n‚Äôt feel like it was the right deci¬≠sion con¬≠sid¬≠er¬≠ing all the cir¬≠cum¬≠stances,‚ÄĚ Skin¬≠ner said, refer¬≠ring to the recent scan¬≠dals that have rocked the Miss USA organization.

Over the past week, both Sri¬≠vas¬≠ta¬≠va, 17, and the Miss USA title¬≠hold¬≠er Noelia Voigt, 24, abdi¬≠cat¬≠ed their roles amid alle¬≠ga¬≠tions of bul¬≠ly¬≠ing and mis¬≠man¬≠age¬≠ment by the orga¬≠ni¬≠za¬≠tion‚Äôs CEO, Lay¬≠lah Rose.

Skin¬≠ner, who has been work¬≠ing towards the Miss Teen USA title since she was 12 years old, said her ‚Äúintegri¬≠ty and char¬≠ac¬≠ter will always come before crowns.‚ÄĚ

‚ÄúPageants have their stig¬≠ma about being just about the glitz and the glam, but for me its about the advo¬≠ca¬≠cy. I grew up in a sin¬≠gle par¬≠ent house¬≠hold. I‚Äôm a sur¬≠vivor of fam¬≠i¬≠ly domes¬≠tic vio¬≠lence and that‚Äôs why I cre¬≠at¬≠ed my own orga¬≠ni¬≠za¬≠tion,‚ÄĚ Skin¬≠ner told the Post, refer¬≠ring to her non-prof¬≠it Hands of Hope that empow¬≠ers thou¬≠sands of teenagers.

The Miss USA Organization in Disarray

The controversy surrounding the Miss USA organization has thrown the future of the pageants into question.

A spokesper¬≠son for The CW Net¬≠work, which broad¬≠casts the pageants, told the Post that they are ‚Äúeval¬≠u¬≠at¬≠ing its rela¬≠tion¬≠ship with both pageants‚ÄĚ in light of the recent events.

Sources close to the sit¬≠u¬≠a¬≠tion described an orga¬≠ni¬≠za¬≠tion that is ‚Äúdivid¬≠ed‚ÄĚ in its sup¬≠port of Voigt and Sri¬≠vas¬≠tava‚Äôs deci¬≠sions to step down. The Post also report¬≠ed that the CEO had secret¬≠ly post¬≠ed under the win¬≠ners‚Äô social media accounts and restrict¬≠ed their access.

Miss Hawaii’s Savannah Gankiewicz will take over the Miss USA crown on Wednesday, but has faced significant backlash from fans disappointed by the organization’s troubles.

Skin¬≠ner‚Äôs deci¬≠sion to decline the Miss Teen USA title under¬≠scores the deep issues plagu¬≠ing the pageant sys¬≠tem. Her com¬≠mit¬≠ment to empow¬≠er¬≠ing young women through advo¬≠ca¬≠cy over crowns sets an inspir¬≠ing exam¬≠ple dur¬≠ing this tumul¬≠tuous time.
