The Cornelius Police Department in North Carolina has named Diana Cojocari, the mother of 11-year-old Madalina Cojocari who went missing in 2022, as a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance.

This marks the first time the girl’s mother has been publicly identified as a potential perpetrator in the ongoing investigation.

Madalina was last seen getting off her school bus on November 21, 2022 in Cornelius. Her parents did not report her missing until over three weeks later on December 15, despite the school contacting Diana “several” times to inquire about Madalina’s absence.

Diana and her husband, Christopher Palmiter, who is Madalina’s stepfather, were initially arrested and charged with failing to report a minor missing. Diana served 16 months in jail but was released last month, while Christopher received 30 months probation.

Police have stated since the beginning that Diana and Christopher were not fully transparent about what they knew. A search warrant also revealed Diana had asked a relative to help her escape from her marriage to Christopher shortly before Madalina disappeared.

Authorities are urging the public to continue sharing information that could aid in locating Madalina, who has now been missing for over eight months. Diana’s new designation as a suspect suggests investigators believe she may have played a role in her daughter’s vanishing.
