Dramatic Rescue at Nebraska County Fair
In a shockÂing inciÂdent at the MerÂrick CounÂty FairÂgrounds on August 24, 2024, a 3âmonth-old baby was left alone in a hot car while the mothÂer allegedÂly went horseÂback riding.
The temÂperÂaÂture outÂside was around 90 degrees FahrenÂheit when authorÂiÂties respondÂed to the disÂtressÂing call.
Hero on Horseback: Roperâs Quick Action Saves Infant
Edgar EstraÂda, a ropÂing conÂtesÂtant at the fair, became an unlikeÂly hero when he heard a babyâs cries. MountÂing his horse, EstraÂda searched the parkÂing lot, weavÂing between vehiÂcles until he locatÂed the disÂtressed infant.
After about 10 minÂutes, he manÂaged to pry open the car winÂdow and resÂcue the baby.
âI instantÂly got on the horse and ran up and down the parkÂing lot area where the vehiÂcles were at, and I was just weavÂing in and out lookÂing for this cryÂing baby,â EstraÂda told Fox Nebraska.
Mother Arrested on Child Abuse Charges
Cara Dugan, 40, was arrestÂed at the fairÂgrounds after authorÂiÂties found her inside a buildÂing, ridÂing a horse.
The MerÂrick CounÂty SherÂifÂfâs Office statÂed that the baby had been left unatÂtendÂed in a pickÂup truck with the engine off and winÂdows only parÂtialÂly open for a conÂsidÂerÂable time.
Childâs Safety and Legal Consequences
The infant was takÂen to a local hosÂpiÂtal and forÂtuÂnateÂly did not susÂtain any injuries. FolÂlowÂing the inciÂdent, the child was placed in the cusÂtody of the NebrasÂka DepartÂment of Health and Human Services.
Dugan now faces child abuse charges for her alleged negÂliÂgence. This case highÂlights the danÂgers of leavÂing chilÂdren unatÂtendÂed in vehiÂcles, espeÂcialÂly durÂing hot weather.
