A tragic shooting incident in Crete, Nebraska has left seven people, including four children, injured in what appears to be a racially motivated attack. The gunfire came from 74-year-old resident Billy Booth, who opened fire on a Hispanic family before taking his own life.

The incident occurred just before 4 pm local time on June 30, 2024, prompting a large police response. Four of the victims were children ranging from 3 to 10 years old, while the other three were adults. All are believed to be Hispanic, and some have already been released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to authorities, Booth had previously told the residents of the targeted home to “go back to where you came from” and “speak English” just a month prior, suggesting a possible racial bias behind the attack.

When officers arrived, they found a range of victims suffering from gunshot wounds outside the residence, as well as the suspect inside his own home. A SWAT team was deployed to apprehend Booth, but they ultimately discovered him deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“There could be, we don’t know,” said Nebraska Crete Police Chief Gary Young when asked if the shooting was racially motivated. “Certainly the context of ‘Go home’ and ‘Speak English’ lends itself to that.”

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. The shooting has left the community shaken and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the suspect’s motives and actions.
