A shooting in Crete, Nebraska left 7 people wounded on Friday, including 4 children ages 3–10. The suspected gunman, 74-year-old Billy Booth, opened fire from his home across the street, striking the family.

According to police, at approximately 4:30pm Booth began firing shots toward the victims’ home on Crestline Drive. All 7 people were transported to the hospital, though their injuries are expected to survive. The children suffered shotgun blast wounds.

Investigators found Booth dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his home. He was known to have prior disputes with the victim’s family, including racist remarks telling them to “go back home” and “speak English.” There is speculation the shooting was racially motivated.

The Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team responded and breached Booth’s door, finding two firearms inside. Only one shotgun is believed to have been used in the attack. No officers fired their weapons during the incident.

This was a disturbing act of violence that deeply impacted this close-knit community. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine a clear motive for the neighbor’s deadly attack.
