The New York Times has delivered a bombshell ultimatum to President Joe Biden, calling for him to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race following his widely panned debate performance against former President Donald Trump.

In a scathing editorial, the Times’ editorial board observed that Biden appeared to be a “shadow” of his former self, stating that the argument for his candidacy was no longer valid. The paper said it could no longer ignore the president’s “awful” showing on the debate stage, bluntly stating: “Mr. Biden can’t continue this race.”

Despite praising Biden’s administration as “admirable,” the Times acknowledged that the president “struggled to respond to Mr. Trump’s provocations” and “struggled to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his lies, his failures and his chilling plans.” The editorial board declared that voters “cannot be expected to ignore what was
plain to see: Mr. Biden is not the man he was four years ago.”

The Times’ strong rebuke marks a significant shift for the “newspaper of record,” which had previously relegated its coverage of Biden’s debate performance to a small paragraph on the front page. This decision sparked criticism from pundits who questioned whether the Times would have been as comparatively silent had the roles been reversed.

In the aftermath of the debate, Trump was quick to pour scorn on Biden’s performance, mocking the president’s preparation and suggesting the country cannot survive another four years of his leadership. Meanwhile, Biden’s allies, including former President Barack Obama, rushed to his defense, with Obama writing that “bad debate nights happen” but the election remains a choice between Biden and Trump.
